Meet the Maker

I’m Kevin, the maker behind Lathe of the Land. From my workshop in Santa Cruz, California, I handcraft rings using wood, gemstones, and materials that carry a personal connection.

What began as a woodworking hobby grew into my business in 2018. Today, Lathe of the Land is still a one-person workshop. When you reach out with a question or an idea, you’re talking directly to the person who will make your ring.

Small Landscapes, Made by Hand

Much of my work draws from the places I love: redwood forests, mountain ranges, and the ocean. I translate those landscapes into designs that wrap around a ring—a breaking wave, a line of mountain peaks, or a tiny fern beside a banana slug.

The materials help shape each piece. Wood grain changes from one ring to the next, and crushed stone creates patterns that can’t be repeated exactly. Even when I make the same design again, the finished ring has its own character.

Each ring is made individually, with hands-on care through shaping, inlaying, sanding, and polishing. These small details take time, and they’re what make the work feel personal.

A Ring with Your Story in It

Sometimes the meaning comes from a favorite landscape. Other times, it comes from something you send me: flowers from a wedding bouquet, sand from a meaningful beach, or materials kept in memory of someone you love.
